“Unashamedly gothic, occasionally melodramatic and with the plot of a thriller... Constance Drinkwater is remarkable new Australian theatre.” (Sydney Morning Herald)
— Sydney Morning Herald
Winner of the 2005 Patrick White Award and the New York Dramatists award, this finely etched play promises a “dark and stormy night in the theatre” (Sun Herald). Constance Drinkwater, two of her daughters and a demented priest are the last surviving remnants of an attempt to settle an isolated and unforgiving area on Cape York as the 19th century draws to a close. With her husband, her servants and five of her daughters dead, Lady Constance battles to hold on to the trappings of decency and the illusion of safety. This play enjoyed sell-out seasons in Brisbane for the Queensland Theatre Company and in Sydney for Griffin Theatre Company.
