Past Events > Flashmob 4/6/11

On Saturday 4th of June, a group of 30 seniors took part in Townsville's first over 55's flashmob. The group gathered inconspicuously in the Stockland foodcourt, at which point onlookers were surprised and delighted to see the large group break into spontaneous song.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness for elder abuse by bringing it to public attention through their T-shirt slogans and by breaking the negative stereotypes which some currently hold against seniors, done in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

This event came about in partnership with Townsville Regional Arts Development Fund, Women's Community Legal Service, Gucki Reissenberger and Madonna Davies.

The participants spent many weeks practicing together here at the courthouse and it looks like all their hard work paid off. The event was covered by the Townsville Bulletin and Local TV News. Here is a link to the Townsville Bulletin story online, which includes another video.
